The Drivers' Permit Practice Test started out because of a young man. He was visiting the home of our head programmer one evening, and was over-heard talking about his trouble learning from the free, printed driver's manual. Our programmer came to us the next day with a great idea: study for the permit test on a computer. We ordered him to work. Within a short time, he had an early version of this software ready for his young friend to try. After working on it for a week (and finding a few errors!), the young man went to try a 4th time to pass the permit test. When our programmer next met up with him, the young man was a licensed driver. He shook our programmer's hand and said thanks for allowing him to use the program. He was convinced that without it, he would have failed again. After some further tweaking, we looked for a test market. We focused on libraries - a common source for driver's manuals - and chose our local one. We've been testing it there for about a year and the use is remarkable - they've added it to two more work stations and have 2 circulating copies. The use isn't just kids looking to get their permit, but adults seeing how much they really know and little kids dreaming of the future (or thinking it is a computer game!). So there you have the true story of the software.
Proven a winner.
